In the coal town of Justice, many people rely on the coal industry for jobs and food for their tables, but their corporate supervisors rarely have their best interests at heart.
For Arlie, a young, idealistic, recent graduate and budding journalist, Justice is home. Her homecoming is marred by the horrific death of a close friend and worry about the environmental disasters coal mining has brought upon the town.
Author Vicky Hayes worked at a small-town newspaper in Paintsville, Kentucky, covering labor and culture. Hayes used real-life experience, events, and research as the basis for Leaving Justice. Her environmental passion has created a stirring indictment of the many unsustainable and inhumane practices prevalent in the coal industry.
She has studied the history of the United Mine Workers’ in Eastern Kentucky and used the events of the strike as a foundation for Leaving Justice. Readers will gain a new appreciation for Appalachian culture and unsettling knowledge about the environmental and economic impact of the coal industry.

Hayes has done her research. Not only did she grow up in Appalachia, she studied the culture as a scholar. This fictional tale is grounded firmly in the truth of the region. Unlike stereotypical accounts of the poor dumb hillbilly so applauded in NYC, Leaving Justice should be taught in all Appalachian studies courses for it's authentic educational enlightenment into the coal industry's effects on a prideful, hardscrabble group of people. Hayes treatise is honest and respectful, her characters are the real deal.Product details

Leaving Justice edition by Vicky Hayes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A great read with an insider perspective on the fight for environmental justice. Really enjoyed the story's perspective.
It is obvious the author is very knowledgeable about her subject and even has personal experience in this field. She loves the area and the people who inhabit it. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by Vicky Hayes
An intriguing tale of a young woman who returns home to right the wrongs and faces the injustices and struggles of coal mining in Appalachia. It is apparent that Ms Hayes is working from experience and writes with honesty of life and longings and the strong Topophilia in the mountains.
This is the truth of Appalachia. It captures the complex relationship of mountain people to one another, to their land, and to the coal that has been a defining element in Appalachian culture. This story has many elements that are central to the genre of Appalachain fiction, but it is also a compelling and relatable tale, even to those who are less familiar with the intricacies of coal country. Just a great story. I look forward to more work from Vicky Hayes.
